Imagination works through synthesis. Even your most unique idea has its foundation in your experiences, be it the things you’ve seen and learned in your life or the feelings you have.

Could someone who has been colorblind since birth imagine what the color green looks like? If you could give that person a glimpse of blue and yellow and asked them to think of a color somewhere between, would that person’s imagination even come close?

So too with imagination. If you want to be creative and come up with cool new ideas, feed your brain. Whatever your particular creative need might be, from sculpture to computer science, you’ll be more imaginative if you read more, watch more, see more, hear more, talk more, and taste more.

And thanks to the internet, you can experience a lot of the world with your butt firmly planted in a chair. I comb the internet for websites that offer a regular barrage of unique images, and I keep a set of files of inspirational and arresting pictures.
