Upcoming Fantasy Film: Brave

Once called The Bear and the Bow, Brave has already caused controversy, and we barely know anything about it. Being made by Pixar, Brave was to be directed by one of the women responsible for writing it. The female director would have been a first for Pixar (whereas other animation studios have a better track record). Yet for reasons that are very unclear, she no longer has the job.

There might be a very good reason for the gentleman who now has the job to take over, but it does seem a shame that a film with a female heroine, written in large part by a woman, will now not be directed by the woman whose obviously put a great deal of passion into the project.

Here’s a rundown of the plot from Disney’s press release:

“A rugged and mythic Scotland is the setting for Pixar’s action-adventure The Bear and the Bow. The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer. A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father’s kingdom and her mother’s life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right.”
